PlanetScale removes hobby plan. Alternatives databases

PlanetScale, a database-as-a-service company, will stop offering the Hobby Plan on April 8, 2024, affecting users using the free tier for smaller-scale projects. The Hobby Plan was a popular choice among developers and hobbyists looking for a cost-effective database management solution. But with its elimination, users now face the challenge of finding alternative options for their low-traffic applications. In this article, I would like to present an alternative to database that can be used as a replacement for PlanetScale and offers hobby plans.

Railway app

Railway.app offers a streamlined platform for simplified deployment and hosting of web applications. With features such as automatic SSL, database management, and support for various languages and frameworks, Railway.app presents a viable alternative for users seeking a seamless transition from PlanetScale. Explore its user-friendly interface and robust functionalities for efficient application development and deployment. It also uses MySQL for databases, which migration will be way easier from PlanetScale.

Supabase

Supabase stands out as a compelling replacement for PlanetScale, offering a versatile open-source platform for database management. With a focus on simplicity and scalability, Supabase provides real-time functionalities, API generation, and easy integration, making it an excellent choice for developers looking to transition from PlanetScale. It also has MySQL support and offers guides for migration, which can be very handy.

Neon

Neon.tech is one of the better databases. It doesn't stand out from Railwayapp, Supabase and PlanetScale by anything. It includes in its offer a free tier thanks to which you can use for hobbyist projects. The only downside is that it has support for Postgres. And this means that if you want to migrate from PlanetScale to Neon, you have to convert MySQL to Postgres. Nevertheless, Neon is worth attention and everyone should consider this option.

I hope I was able to help you find alternatives after PlanetScale killed their hobby plan. If you have any suggestions or want to express your opinion, feel free to visit the comment section.
